History for Your Wrist

The Arc II — Fordite series features dials handmade from "Motor City Agate".

A byproduct of the automotive industry, Fordite is layers and layers of over-sprayed car paint that have cured together to form a rock-hard substance that is popular for its aesthetic properties.

This model is called "Milly Vanilly".

There are three types of Fordite dials crafted by Arcanaut: The “Ripple Milled” variety seen here, takes either a "Linear" or "Groovy" dial and mills a three-dimensional pattern into it.

After years of working with Fordite, we feel we know the material pretty well. We understand how to get the best out of the blocks and nodes of “Motor City Agate” we receive from our supplier in Detroit. However, over the years, we’ve seen more and more brands trying to copy our methods and so we knew it was time to explore the possibilities of this fascinating material further to figure out how we could stay one step ahead of the game…

We've developed a process we call "Ripple Milling". This enables us to carve topographical patterns into Fordite itself, revealing multiple levels of the material at once, allowing us to "look back through time".

We've applied the technique (which requires a lot of patient preparation and then a very delicate machining process) to both Groovy and Linear dials and experimented with unique patterns for each. Some are smooth and organic, others are jagged and futuristic.

Note: The images used on this product listed are composite renders that give a realistic impression of what the watch will look like when finally assembled. Due to the unique nature of each Fordite dial, the orientation may be slightly altered from the image displayed here to ensure the dial is optimally legible and interacts with natural light in the most pleasing manner.

01

Black Badger magic

Nowadays, genuine Fordite (which is far more compact and durable than synthetic or homemade Motor City Agate) is used in jewelry production. Arcanaut’s materials maestro, James Thompson, was the first to refine the process for using it in high-end watch design, and now the Arcanaut ARC II - Fordite pieces form an important cornerstone of our collection.

02

Truly unique material

Each piece is entirely unique, with hundreds of stories revealed by every slice. Sadly, modern car production techniques mean Fordite is no longer produced in such enduring quality, so these pieces are the first and last of their kind.

03

The Case

316L stainless steel case, CNC milled north of Copenhagen with tolerances down to a micron (a thousandth of a millimeter or about the same size as a bacteria). The case has a matte micro bead blasted finish, with hand-polished highlights done by watchmaker Claus Valentin in Copenhagen. As with all our watches, the case features our signature "Pentablock" crown, which is shaped to follow the form of the case perfectly.

04

Hands

Laser-cut micro-welded steel hands, made and hand-finished in Denmark. The hands feature a light matte micro-blasted finish, adding to the sleek, stealthy, and sophisticated appearance of the Fordite models.
